Dr. Johnny DuPree entered public service in 1987 when he was appointed to the Hattiesburg Public School Board. In 1991, he was elected to the Forrest County Board of Supervisors, where he served for ten years. In 2001 he was elected as the first African American mayor of the city of Hattiesburg. Dr. DuPree is the longest-serving mayor of Hattiesburg, serving 16 years (2001-2017).

DuPree was the Democratic Party nominee for Governor of Mississippi in 2011. His nomination marked the first time an African American represented a major party as a candidate for Governor of Mississippi since the Reconstruction era. In 2019, DuPree was the Democratic Party nominee for Secretary of State for the State of Mississippi. Most recently, he was elected to serve on the board of Directors of the National Civic League.


In addition to his long public service career, DuPree also has an extensive career working in the private sector. In 1988, he received his real estate brokers’ license. After obtaining his license, he opened Johnny DuPree Realty, a company he still owns and operates. In 2017, DuPree opened Johnny DuPree Consulting, L.L.C. (Certified D.B.E. and M.B.E.), and DuPree Transportation, L.L.C.

As DuPree contributed to the community through public service and in the private sector, he carved out time to pursue higher education. He is a proud graduate of Jones Junior College, the University of Southern Mississippi, and Jackson State University--- where he received his Doctorate in Urban Studies. One of DuPree’s career highlights was when he was invited to share his knowledge with undergraduate students, recently teaching a policy course at the University of Southern Mississippi.

DuPree continues to contribute to his hometown by serving as one of the founding members of the Hattiesburg Evening Optimist Club, Chair of the D.R.E.A.M. Cares of Hattiesburg Mentoring program, and Executive Board Member of the Boy Scouts Pine Burr Area Council.
He is also a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and is a Deacon at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.


DuPree is married to Johniece DuPree. In December 2021, they will celebrate 49 years of marriage. He and Johniece have two daughters, Dr. April DuPree (Coustaur) Taylor and Dr. Monica DuPree. They are the proud grandparents of two boys Chandler and Chesney.
